Next Global Lawyers Congress 2019: bringing together lawyers and civil society in Luxembourg

Luxembourg has been selected to host the 63rd Annual Conference of the Union Internationale des Avocats (International Association of Lawyers – UIA). This event fosters the interaction between professionals of the legal sector and, for the first time, with the general public.

Luxembourg has been selected to host the 63rd Annual Conference of the Union Internationale des Avocats (International Association of Lawyers – UIA). The event, that will be held at the European Convention Centre from 6 to 10 November 2019, brings together almost 1,000 professionals of the legal sector, from 120 countries, to discuss topics of interest to the whole Luxembourg society. Exceptionally this year, some sessions are open to the public.

From innovation to human rights

The program includes plenary sessions and workshops focusing on two main themes: “Innovation and the Law: When Passion Meets Reason”, and “Business and Human Rights”, the main topic of the conference. High level speakers will intervene such as Dante Pesce, member of the UN workgroup on the issue of human rights and transnational corporations, and Viviane Reding, former vice-president of the European Commission in charge of Justice and Fundamental Rights.

Special sessions on European law and institutions and on violence against women are also planned. This last theme will tackle domestic violence by putting the accent on the Istanbul Convention, will follow-up on the Stand Speak Rise Up! conference’s white paper aiming at fighting violence in fragile environment and will explore the role of lawyers in this fight.

Exceptionally this year, the UIA opens these four main working sessions to the civil society living in Luxembourg at a special fee of 350€.

Luxembourg, a city at the heart of international law

The special session dedicated to European law and institutions is a tribute to Luxembourg, ideally positioned at the heart of Europe, but also to its role of European judicial capital. Counting both the European Union Court of Justice and the European Investment Bank on its territory, Luxembourg is well established as a dynamic and reliable business and financial centre.

Being an UIA founding member since 1927, it is only natural that Luxembourg hosts for the fourth time the UIA congress, an initiative strongly supported by Loyens & Loeff Luxembourg that will be represented at the event by Henri Dupong.
