Laurent Mertens

Laurent Mertens, attorney-at-law, is a member of the Litigation & Risk Management practice group in our Brussels office. He focuses on corporate law and M&A. He is in charge of the Insolvency & Restructuring team for Belgium.

About Laurent Mertens

Laurent has acquired particular expertise in transactional matters and advice to business in a cross-border context.  Over the last years, he has redirected his practice on corporate litigation, with a specific focus on restructuring as well as on national and cross-border insolvency.

He is a deputy judge at the French-speaking Business court of Brussels since 2019.

Laurent’s recent activities include assisting and representing:

  • the National Bank of Kazakhstan in the collateral impact of enforcement measures initiated in Belgium on the basis of a Stockholm Chamber of Commerce (SCC) arbitral award.
  • A multinational construction firm in the unwinding of its partnership agreement and in the insolvency proceedings of its former partner, including the repackaging of the security and finance agreements.
  • A Belgian leading retailer in various judicial proceedings, following the discovery of fraud practices committed by one of its suppliers.
